Matthew Rowean (b. 1982) is an American painter working in abstraction. His paintings, are built in layers over months, frameworks of color, ratio, and composition opened to chance, culminating in bursts of intensity. The work sits at the intersection of his training as a designer and his practice as a painter, holding tension between formal structure and the unplanned.
“When painting, I’m going in with frameworks of intent, usually in a color pallet, composition, some ratio between negative and active space, but as the painting unfolds I leave room for chance the influence of my state of mind at that time, and the environmental factors, especially music which has an emotional impact on my work.”
Rowean studied at the Museum School in Boston and the Rhode Island School of Design pre-college program, and received a BFA in painting from Syracuse University.
He lives and works in New York City.
